La caída del 34 por ciento de los precios del maíz durante el año pasado contribuyó a reducir las pérdidas en la porcicultura en los últimos meses, y los criadores esperaban que la contracción de la oferta y una subida estacional de la demanda de cerdo en Estados Unidos este verano reanimaran los beneficios. Sin embargo, con este nuevo revés, habrá más criadores que se verán obligados a retirarse del negocio.
