Carry-trade hara-kiri
El yen sigue rompiendo mínimos en relación al euro y al dólar, siendo la moneda con peor comportamiento entre las 72 principales divisas a nivel mundial. Esto contrasta con las predicciones de los pesos pesados de los mercados, como los alemanes de Deutsche Bank o los suizos de UBS, que desde hace ya tiempo venían apostando por una recuperación del yen.
Que los analistas no acierten no supone ninguna sorpresa. Lo novedoso del asunto es que en esta ocasión la excusa por la falta de tino no son los hedge funds y sus agresivos instrumentos financieros. Esta vez los culpables parecen ser las amas de casa y los pensionistas que se dedican a apostar en contra del Yen en sus ratos libres.
Mientras en China el pasatiempo más popular es invertir en bolsa, en Japón la moda es especular con su divisa. Los inversores se endeudan en yenes (al 0.5% bien se puede) para aprovecharse de los superiores tipos de interés de otras monedas como el dólar neozelandés, el australiano, la libra… Los más aventureros se atreven con el real brasileño y la lira turca.
“Los intereses en Japón son demasiado bajos” dice Hiroshi Ono, una empleado de una empresa de telefonía en Tokio. Ono ha ganado unos 17.000 dólares en los últimos 4 meses, simplemente tomando prestados 200.000 yenes y aprovechando el 4.75% de diferencia que hay entre el interés japonés y el americano. También el dólar neozelandés con intereses del 8% se abre paso entre los favoritos. El famoso “carry trade” en su versión “hágalo usted en casa”.
Estos especuladores aficionados representan el 15% del trading en yenes, un porcentaje que les otorga la capacidad de sostener el yen frente a otras divisas y de paso contradecir a la mayoría de los analistas que el trimestre pasado apostaban por el yen a 115 por dólar para estas fechas. Y es que en lo que va de año ya se han abierto 600,000 cuentas privadas dedicadas a especular con divisas, un 80% más que el año anterior.
Yukiko Ikebe, una ama de casa de 59 años, fue recientemente acusada de evadir impuestos por valor de 139 millones de yenes en sus ganancias de 407 millones con el carry trade. Yuji Sito, jefe del Departamento de Divisas Extranjeras de Societe Generale en Tokio bromeó con contratarla.
“Es mejor que especular con acciones, porque además de la posible revalorización tienes un porcentaje de interés asegurado”, dice Naoko Ogawa, una escritora que utiliza depósitos de 1,000 euros para operar apalancada con 10,000. El apalancamiento entre 10 y 30 veces es lo más usual.
El Banco de Japón ya ha advertido sobre el riesgo de tomar decisiones imprudentes basadas en premisas incorrectas sobre los mercados de divisas y los tipos de interés. Este año ya tuvieron un susto en Febrero, cuando con la caída en China los gestores de fondos se apresuraron a cerrar posiciones arriesgadas y repagar los préstamos en yenes. El yen subió un 2.3% ese mismo día, pero el asunto no pasó a mayores.
En todo caso, no se debe olvidar lo que pasó en octubre de 1998, cuando Rusia anunció el default de su deuda externa y el LTCM quebró por hacer “carry trade” con la moneda japonesa comprando bonos rusos. Con el default, todos los especuladores trataron de repagar sus préstamos en yenes, lo que apreció esta moneda un 22% en relación al dólar en sólo tres días. Añádele una pizca de apalancamiento y… hara-kiri!
Si sustituyes japoneses por chinos y divisas por acciones el post es idéntico al del “cuento chino”. XD
